"Start a lash business at home" is one of the most-searched phrases in lashes, and most of what ranks for it is written for states that let you set up a lash bed in a spare room. Florida is not one of them. Here is what is actually allowed, and the cheapest legal way to start.

The rule

Florida law requires cosmetology services, and eyelash extensions are one, to be performed in a licensed salon. The Board of Cosmetology allows a home salon, but only when the space is:

• separated from the living quarters by a permanent wall,
• has its own entrance, and
• has its own restroom,

and has been licensed on the DBPR salon application and passed the unannounced inspection that follows (typically within about 90 days). A bedroom off the hallway, a converted dining room, a garage you walk through the kitchen to reach: none of these qualify.

What about mobile

Regular house calls are not permitted for lashes. The exceptions in the statute are special events (a wedding-day lash set is fine, with the proper registration) and clients who cannot travel because of illness, arranged through a licensed salon. A route of weekly fills in clients' homes is neither.

The three legal ways to start, cheapest first

1. Add lashes where you already work. You hold the required license, you get certified, and your employer's licensed room becomes your lash room. No build-out, no salon license, no rent. Fills pay for the kit. This is the honest answer to "how to start a lash business with no money."
2. Rent a suite in a licensed salon. Fixed rent (plus Florida's 2% commercial-rent sales tax and county surtax on it), your own hours, your own brand.
3. Build a home salon that meets the three conditions above and passes inspection. This is the most expensive path, not the least: a wall, a door, a bathroom and the permits to add them. It pays off for an artist with a full book who wants zero commute; it is a poor first step.

Banking a fill-based business

A lash business is a recurring-revenue business: a full set, then a fill every two to three weeks. That is its strength, and it needs a specific habit:

• One business checking account in the business name, opened with the EIN. Booking-app and card payouts land there; nothing lands in personal checking.
• Memberships and prepaid fill packages are money you owe until each fill is delivered. Track fills remaining per client, keep the balance in the account, and write the pause and cancellation terms before you sell the first membership.
• Pay yourself by scheduled transfer, so the business account always shows the true picture.
• Adhesive, lashes and aftercare are supplies; retail aftercare you sell is subject to Florida sales tax, so register with the Department of Revenue if you sell it. The service itself is not taxed.
• Insurance that names eyelash extensions; adhesive reactions are the claim lash artists actually face.

The number that decides suite vs employer

Monthly rent plus tax, insurance, software and supplies, divided by your average fill price, is the number of fills the suite costs before you earn a dollar. If your current clients rebook every two to three weeks and that number is comfortably covered, the suite pays. If not, keep the lashes on your employer's menu a little longer.
